THE NETWORK:
The Albertville City School System operates in a Citrix environment. In simple terms, this means that all major software applications such as Microsoft Office, STI, instructional programs, etc. are housed on a centrally located and managed group of servers and not on the local computers in the classrooms or labs. Because of this arrangement, the software applications are available to the users 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world via and Internet connection. Users have real time access to their data and applications as if they were sitting in the classroom or office.
AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY:
The Albertville School System operates the largest computer network in Marshall County. Currently there are almost 1,550 units connected to the network. One-third of the computers are Apple macs and the other two-thirds are Windows-based units.
In addition to the computers there are more than 75 interactive white boards available in classrooms from Kindergarten through high school.
A distance learning lab is housed at Albertville High School.
A state of the art training center is located at the Professional Development Center
Digital projectors are found in every school. All classrooms at Albertville Primary and Albertville Elementary are equipped with projectors.
Other technology tools such as classroom response systems, document cameras, digital cameras and digital keyboards are present in the system.
The system features four (4) 21st Century classrooms. These classrooms are located at Albertville Elementary, Evans Elementary and Albertville Middle School.
THE STAFF:
The Albertville City School City has a technology staff composed of four individuals. Two of the staff members have network-related responsibilities. One staff member is responsible for the management of instructional software systems. The final member of the staff is the technician who is responsible for the effective operation of the end user equipment. All four staff members share responsibilities such as professional development, system maintenance and general security of the entire network.
BUDGET:
The Albertville City School System is committed to providing the best possible technology for use by students and staff. The annual budget for technology expenditure is approximately $265,000. Almost 61% of the budget is spent for hardware maintenance and upgrades. Another 24% is for software licensing and slightly more than 15% is budgeted for network connectivity and security. The school system applies for and receives funding from the E-Rate program annually.
