Building Based Staff Support Teams (BBSST)According to federal and state law, each student in the Building-Based Student Support Team (BBSST) process must be provided interventions in the general education program by general education teachers that address the student’s academic and/or behavioral needs. By law, these interventions should occur by all educators for eight to ten weeks for students with chronic academic or behavioral challenges. All decisions are made with the consensus of the team. The information required on the BBSST referral form MUST be completed by the referring general education teacher.
BBSST is to be used for writing strategies for any general education student that is at risk of failure academically or behaviorally (At-Risk definition: core grades below C, stanines 1,2,3, or 4 on standardized tests, chronic behavior referrals, etc.). Although it is a required step before special education testing, it is not used ONLY for pre-special education testing purposes. Approximately 93% of students served on BBSST plans never get referred for testing. They remain in their current general education placement, and interventions are developed to meet their needs for success. Any general education student that does not have a ‘specialized’ need may be served by BBSST (i.e., 504, IEP, ELL, speech, medical needs).
